A separate six-mile skating lane meanders around the lower portion of the mountain. Well maintained. Parking lot, toilet and informal bulletin board with maps. Herman Vogler Conservation Area [Hiking & Ski Trails], Off US 23 on Birchwood Drive, Rogers City, MI 49779, Phone: (989) 734-4000. The HVCA contains more than seven miles of trails, all used by hikers, cross-country skiers, hunters and nature lovers. Four main trails run along Trout River and are beginner, moderate and challenging. The trail system traces a path through a constantly changing blend of habitats that range from hardwood highlands to cedar thickets and marshes.

Hoist Lake Foot Travel Area - 20 + miles. Novice and intermediate levels. Trailheads are located 6 miles north of Glennie on M-65 and 6 miles north of Alcona Park on Aspen Alley Rd. Hoist Lakes encompasses over 10,000 acres of pine, aspen and hardwoods forest. The area is large enough to challenge and back-country enthusiast. There are over twenty miles of trails winding through small pothole lakes and area of beaver flooding, as well over and around hills and ridges. The Hoist Lakes area is for people who desire a longer walk or ski, and is ideal for a backpacking trip of two days to a week.

AuSable State Forest, Grayling, MI 49738, Phone: (989) 348-6371. 11.5 mile groomed ski, hike trail. Non-motorized area on the South Branch of the AuSable River. 15 miles east of Grayling. Ranging in length from 2 7/10 mi. to 11 3/10 mi. Recommended to ski or hike with a buddy... some sections of this trail are a considerable distance from the nearest plowed road. Very scenic, remote, quiet area! Near Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground.

Pine Baron Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trail], 5 miles SW of Gaylord, Mackinaw State Forest, Gaylord, MI 49735, Phone: (989) 732-3541. 8.75 (14km) mile groomed ski, hike, bike trail. Has nice scenery with woods to decrease the wind chill. This novice trail is nearly flat on all but the "Whopping Loop" which has some small hills.

Reid Lake Foot Travel Area - 7 miles. Reid Lake is located in the central portion of Alcona County, Michigan. From Glennie, take M-65 north to M-72, take M-72 east for 3-1/2 miles to the parking lot and trail head. From Harrisville, take M-72 west 19 miles, and from Mio take M-72 east 31 miles to the parking lot and trail head. The Reid Lake Area is relatively small, encompassing only 3,000 acres. Six miles of gently rolling trail will lead you around Reid Lake, once part of a Northern Michigan farm. If you are interested in spending and hour to an afternoon in the forest, without facing to great a physical test, this is the area for you. The U.S.D.A. Forest Service manages this area with an emphasis on providing back-country recreation experiences within a working forest environment. As you travel through this area, watch for examples of timber harvesting and tree regeneration, wildlife habitat management and watershed protection. Tisdale Triangle Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trail], M-18 & Tisdale Road, AuSable State Forest, Roscommon, MI 48653, Phone: (989) 275-4622. 10.1 miles, groomed ski, hike, bike trail. The trail has multiple loops all of which are relatively flat terrain.

Wakely Lake Foot Travel Area [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trails], M-72 West, Huron-Mainstee National Forest, Grayling, MI 49738, Phone: (989) 826-3252. A federally owned special area designed for the protection and restoration of the population of threatened loons and eagles. Vegetation varies from tag alder and conifer swamps to upland jack pine, white pine and oak. Fishing is catch and release only to maintain food supply for loons. Walk-in access and camping. With an extensive network of trails, it is a scenic, non-motorized area. Hiking, biking & ungroomed cross-country ski trails range in length from 4 1/2 miles to 7 miles. Loon nesting area closed to public from March 1 to July 1.
