River Road National Scenic Byway

Running with the Au Sable (River of Sand) for twenty two miles through the white pine forests of Michigan is the River Road Scenic Byway. Once a westward link for Native Americans and French Fur traders the Au Sable River continues to be a major water way today. Six hydroelectric dams, providing power to surrounding communities, have created thousands of acres of tree-lined lakes that are home to bass, walleye, northern pike, tiger muskies, and other fish. The abundant fish and remoteness of the dams, in addition to keeping the fishermen happy, have aided in the recovery of the bald eagle along this part of the Au Sable River. Not the only wildlife to benefit from the Au Sable, visitors can view abundant wildlife from the high banks of the river. In fact, the scenery one sees from the River Road Scenic Byway has just the right combination of open water and forested land to create a view known for its postcard like quality.
