 Presque Isle is located on the eastern shore of Grand Lake in southeastern Presque Isle County. The village was named from the county which had been established in 1840. The name (French for almost an island) was given by the French canoers because the land here formed a narrow peninsula jotting out into Lake Huron. The first settler Frederick G. Burnham, came here about 1860 to engage in the cordwood business and built a dock and boat landing in Presque Isle Harbor. It was given a post office on April 7, 1884, with Mr. Burnham as its first postmaster. The office was closed on November 12, 1892, but has been restored since April 6, 1899.
