The settlement formed around the works of the J. E. Potts Salt & Lumber Company and was given a post office as Potts on June 3, 1886, with Jeremiah D. Hunt as its first postmaster. H. M. Loud & Sons Lumber Company bought the mill, machinery, railroad equipment, timber and lands of the defunct Potts firm in 1891 and developed the Potts headquarters into a thriving lumber town. The Potts post office was renamed McKinley on January 28, 1892. Soon after 1900, the railroad repair shops burned, and lack of timber did not warrant their rebuilding, the post office was closed on September 30, 1913.
